Box Office Battle: 'Dune' wins weekend with strong debut despite HBO Max Play

"Box Office Battle" is The Fly's weekly roundup of what movies topped the weekend's box office.

AT&T (T) subsidiary Warner Bros.' "Dune" won the domestic box office with a strong $40.1M debut despite its dual release as it opened simultaneously in 4,125 theaters across North America and on streamer HBO Max. Globally, the movie moved past the $100M mark after opening previously in earlier markets. "Dune" grossed another $47.4M from 75 markets overseas for a foreign cume of $180.6M and $220.2M globally.

BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Comcast (CMCSA) subsidiary Universal's "Halloween Kills" placed number 2 with another $14.5M for a domestic cume of $73.1M and $90.0M globally. Behind it was "No Time to Die" with another $11.9M from 3,807 locations. Sony's (SONY) "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" placed number 4, earning $9.1M as it crossed the $350M milestone globally. Rounding out the top five, Disney's (DIS) "Ron's Gone Wrong" grossed an estimated $7.3M in its debut weekend.

  3. "No Time to Die" – $11.9M
  4. "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" - $9.1M
  5. "Ron's Gone Wrong" - $7.3M

Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include ViacomCBS (VIAC) and Lionsgate's (LGF.A).
